Playmersion is a unique combination of nine interactive, sport and skill related applications. Each application offers a varying degree of low impact activation as well as cognitive stimulation. The players are immersed in exciting virtual worlds where they are able to interact with their surroundings in a variety of achievement-based, action-oriented gaming environments.

Applications included:

Coconuts

Coconut – is a game of skill whereby the player must try to deflect the coconuts into a set of numbered baskets along the side of the screen. The objective is to see how many coconuts the player can get into the baskets. The player can use hands, arms, or even their head to knock the coconuts towards the baskets.

Juggler

Juggler – is a relaxing low impact activation game. The player is immersed into a carnival-like environment and is able to juggle virtual balls that descend from above. The longer the player is able to keep the balls in the air, the more balls will appear. This application has been studied extensively as beneficial for use with stroke patients.

Ninja

Ninja – is a fun and active game whereby the player must fend off ninja fighters in four different scenarios. Players can defend themselves by moving their hands and arms. Slight movement of the head and upper body are incorporated into the game.

Orbosity

Orbosity – is a game designed to stimulate both cognitive and physical activation as well as encourage reaching and controlled movement. Players are immersed in an environment that fills with egg-like objects. A gentle touch will turn them into birds, while a hard touch will cause the eggs to explode. The challenge of the game is to gently release the birds from the eggs. This application has been used in studies involving stroke and cerebral palsy patients.

Tilt

Tilt – is a game designed to stimulate both cognitive and physical activation through four games: pong, tee ball, target and tilt? The player is immersed in a space capsule and through subtle upper body movement the player can move the capsule throughout the virtual world. Hand gestures enable the player to gain additional points.

Soccer

Soccer – immerses players into a soccer net where they are challenged to stop in-coming soccer balls. This game provides low impact, upper extremity activation as the player must try to stop the balls from entering the net.

Volleyball

Volleyball – immerses players onto a sandy beach court where they are able to bump, set and spike the virtual volleyball. Volleyball offers low impact, upper extremity activation in a sports-like setting.

Sharkbait

Sharkbait – immerses the player in an air bubble which drops into the ocean. The player can move freely by simple head or upper body movements and must try to protect the fragile air bubble by avoiding the sharks and needle fish.

Wizards cavern

Wizards Cavern – the player is immersed into a magical two dimensional world, complete with owls, bats and fire-breathing dragons. The player can shoot fire balls from their hands and fly through the air using only the slightest upper body movement.
